Chinese New Year causes shark fin feeding frenzy

Shark fin soup has been a staple and tradition at Chinese New Year dinners!  For generations this has been served, it is believed to reverse aging and improve libido.  

Why has this become such hot button over the last few years.  In the past, Chinese wealth was restricted to a narrow band of communist party leaders.  During the past decade Chinese wealth has dramatically increased and additionally broadened.  Now the new middle class wants their shark fin soup, once only assessable to communist party leaders.  The environment impact is huge; the world’s oceans are not capable if supporting the new demand!

International recognition of the environmental disaster is increasing, most believe too slow.

Here is a short list of groups banning shark fin soup.  Hong Kong based Peninsula and Shangri-La hotel groups, Singapore’s largest supermarket chain, NTUC FairPrice, halts sales in March 2012. The governments of Taiwan, European Union and the state of California all have banned shark finning.
